Ramón Gallud Street Reopens After Major Drainage Upgrade

New stormwater system finished ten days early and dramatically improves flood protection in the city centre

If you live or drive in central Torrevieja, you’ll be pleased to hear that a long-awaited improvement has just been completed.

Calle Ramón Gallud is now open to traffic after major stormwater improvements

The section of Calle Ramón Gallud between María Parodi and Rambla Juan Mateo has been reopened to traffic after AGAMED and the City Council finished major drainage works. The project was completed ten days ahead of schedule – always a nice surprise.

Key improvements

  • New drainage system increases water evacuation capacity by 925%
  • Significantly reduces flooding risk on María Parodi
  • Investment of more than €300,000
  • Part of Torrevieja’s larger flood prevention plan

Better protection against heavy rain

Torrevieja, like many coastal cities, has struggled with heavy rain and flooding in certain areas. The old drainage system simply couldn’t handle the large volumes of water during intense storms. The new infrastructure changes that dramatically.

By connecting the street to a recently built main drainage gallery, rainwater can now be led away much more efficiently toward the port area, reducing surface flooding and improving safety for drivers and pedestrians.

A welcome relief for locals

Many residents and business owners in the city centre will breathe a sigh of relief. The works not only improve traffic flow but also offer better protection for homes, shops and public spaces during the autumn and winter rains that sometimes hit the Costa Blanca.

The fact that the project finished ahead of time shows good coordination between the City Council and AGAMED, and means the city is better prepared before the busy summer season really kicks in.

Part of a bigger plan

This project is one piece of Torrevieja’s larger “Plan Director de Pluviales” – a long-term strategy to modernise the city’s drainage systems and make it more resilient to climate change. With increasingly intense rainfall events becoming more common, such investments are becoming more and more important.

For those of us who live here, it’s comforting to see the city actively working on practical solutions that make everyday life safer and more pleasant.
