The exhibition opens September 27 at Tavi y Carmona Sports Palace and runs until October 19 with free admission.
Torrevieja will open the exhibition “Women, Legends of Sport” on Saturday, September 27, at 5:00 p.m. at the Tavi y Carmona Sports Palace. The presentation was led by sports councillor Diana Box and Jesús Segarra-Saavedra, director of the University of Alicante’s Torrevieja Campus.
The event will begin with the inaugural lecture “Sports Training in Women: Science and Challenges,” by University of Alicante professor Gema Sanchis-Soler, who will discuss key physiological differences between men and women, training during different menstrual phases, and insights from elite female athletes.
Visitors will then be able to explore a collection featuring iconic items from national and international sportswomen. Highlights include the first Olympic torch to reach Spain en route to Mexico ’68, the torch from the 2004 Athens Games, swimwear from Mari Paz Corominas — Spain’s first female Olympic finalist — and the parade outfit of Alicante’s Isabel Fernández, Olympic judo gold medallist in Sydney 2000.
The exhibition also includes items from champions such as Theresa Zabell, Lydia Valentín, María Pérez, and international icons Simone Biles, Yelena Isinbayeva, and Megan Rapinoe. A special section honours local athletes from Torrevieja and the University of Alicante, with objects from Jennifer Colino, Mónica Ferrández, Mari Carmen Moreno, Yasmina Carbonell, and others.
Among the most unique pieces are the skis of Blanca Fernández Ochoa — Spain’s first female Olympic medallist — and the golf bag used by Carlota Ciganda at the 2024 Paris Olympics. The exhibition includes QR-coded audioguides voiced by sports journalists María Escario, Olga Viza, and Paloma del Río.
