Torrevieja Hosts 4th National Suicidology Congress

Event on September 18 will gather experts to discuss prevention under the motto “Talk, Educate, Prevent”

On September 18, the International Auditorium of Torrevieja will host the 4th National Congress of the Spanish Society of Suicidology, with the support of the City Council’s Department of Public Health. The event, held under the theme “Talk, Educate, Prevent,” will bring together leading specialists, researchers, educators, and institutions to address today’s key challenges in suicide prevention.

The program includes panels on insomnia and hopelessness, the role of sport in mental health, genetic research on suicide, and the impact of serious mental disorders. A dedicated session will also explore suicide prevention in schools, reflecting the importance of educational settings as protective environments. Olympic medalist Daniel Plaza and several leading psychiatrists and psychologists are among the speakers.

Mayor Eduardo Dolón will open the congress, and the closing keynote will be delivered by psychiatrist and public educator Luis Gutiérrez Rojas, highlighting the importance of social awareness on suicide. The event coincides with World Suicide Prevention Day, marked globally on September 10, and reinforces the urgent call for coordinated efforts across health, education, and community sectors. Registration is open until September 10 at www.congresosuicidologia.es.
