A lifetime dedicated to nature recognised in Molino del Agua
Torrevieja has paid a heartfelt tribute to a man whose quiet dedication helped create one of the city’s most beloved natural spaces. Antonio Ruiz, affectionately known as “El Liebre”, was honoured with a commemorative plaque in the Paraje Natural Municipal del Molino del Agua.

A lifetime of dedication
Antonio Ruiz’s story with the Molino del Agua area began in the 1920s after he suffered a serious accident. Assigned to look after a small patch of forest, he moved to La Mata and began the lifelong task of planting, protecting and nurturing thousands of pine trees despite difficult conditions.
From small beginnings to protected paradise
Through decades of hard work, that modest pine grove grew into the beautiful natural park that thousands enjoy today. He also helped build paths and improve access to the area.
A moving ceremony
The plaque was inaugurated in the presence of Mayor Eduardo Dolón, Councillor Concha Sala, VOX councillors, family and friends. The mayor highlighted Antonio Ruiz as an example of the silent effort that built Torrevieja’s natural heritage.
Preserving local memory
This tribute ensures that Antonio Ruiz “El Liebre” will be remembered as an important figure in the city’s environmental history. The plaque now stands as a permanent thank you at the entrance to the park he helped create.
