Torrevieja Opens Application Period for Holy Week Camping

Traditional Easter camping tradition returns 28 March to 13 April 2026 – applications must be submitted by 20 March via electronic headquarters or in person

TORREVIEJA – The Mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolón, has issued an official municipal proclamation announcing that the application period is now open for the traditional Holy Week camping in the Área Recreativa Municipal “José Eduardo Gil Rebollo”. This popular outdoor activity, a long-standing Easter custom among local families, allows residents to enjoy several days of camping and “días de campo” (country days) in a large green space.

The authorised camping period runs from Friday 28 March to Sunday 13 April 2026 (both dates inclusive), covering the full Holy Week and Easter weekend. Interested parties have until Thursday 20 March 2026 to submit their applications. The Town Hall aims to process all requests in time and allocate the limited number of available spots fairly.

“This camping tradition has become one of the most cherished ways for Torrevieja families to enjoy Holy Week in contact with nature, and we want to ensure it continues in an orderly, respectful and sustainable manner.”

— Eduardo Dolón, Mayor of Torrevieja

Strict Rules to Protect the Area

Authorisations are granted under the municipal ordinance regulating green zones, natural areas and roadside trees. Any activity that interferes with normal public use of the space requires prior approval from the Local Government Board. Successful applicants must sign a responsible declaration and agree to several key restrictions:

  • No activities that disturb other users or nearby residents
  • No damage to urban furniture, vegetation, trees or green areas
  • Full compliance with the municipal noise and vibration pollution ordinance
  • Proper waste management and site restoration after departure

Failure to respect these rules may result in immediate revocation of permission, fines or exclusion from future editions. The measure ensures the large recreational area – a valuable green lung in the La Mata district – remains enjoyable for all visitors throughout the year.

A Deep-Rooted Torrevieja Tradition

For more than a decade, the “José Eduardo Gil Rebollo” area has been the main destination for Torrevieja residents seeking an authentic outdoor Easter experience. Last year (2025), over 1,200 people camped in 365 authorised tents, turning the site into a lively temporary village of families, barbecues, games and relaxation. The tradition combines religious observance with the Mediterranean custom of spending Holy Week outdoors, away from the city centre.

With Torrevieja’s population continuing to grow – including many expatriate families who have adopted local customs – demand for camping spots remains high. Early application is strongly recommended, especially for larger groups or families who wish to camp together.

How to Apply & What to Expect Next

Applications should preferably be submitted electronically through the official Torrevieja electronic headquarters (torrevieja.sedelectronica.es) for faster processing. Paper applications are also accepted at the Municipal Registry office. Once the deadline closes on 20 March, the Local Government Board will review requests and publish the list of authorised campers in due course.

This organised approach helps preserve one of Torrevieja’s most beloved Holy Week traditions while protecting the natural environment that makes the experience possible. Whether you’re a long-time resident or new to the area, the camping period offers a unique opportunity to enjoy Easter in a relaxed, nature-filled setting right on the doorstep of the city.
