Torrevieja Awards €3.2M Contract to Transform Historic La Purísima Buildings into Innovation Hub

iHub Torretech will drive technology, entrepreneurship, and business growth – works begin mid-December 2025

TORREVIEJA, Spain – In a major boost to the city’s economic future, the Ayuntamiento de Torrevieja has officially awarded a €3.223 million contract for the full rehabilitation of the historic La Purísima former kindergarten and the Coral Francisco Vallejos building. The project, led by Tecnología de la Construcción y Obras Públicas S.A., will transform these emblematic structures into a cutting-edge innovation and entrepreneurship hub known as iHub Torretech.

The announcement was made on November 5, 2025, by Domingo Paredes, Councillor for Contracting and Promotion of Employment, Entrepreneurship, and Local Development. After a competitive bidding process involving seven companies, Tecnología de la Construcción y Obras Públicas S.A. secured the contract with the highest combined technical and economic score.

Works are scheduled to begin in the first half of December 2025, following final contract formalization and submission of the performance bond. The project includes a shortened execution timeline — reduced by 15 weeks from the original 18-month plan — and an extended 45-month warranty, ensuring long-term quality and reliability.

“This project symbolizes the transformation of Torrevieja’s urban heart and the council’s commitment to recovering emblematic spaces to serve economic, social, and cultural development.”

A Strategic Vision for Socioeconomic Renewal

The rehabilitation will physically connect the two adjacent buildings via a shared central courtyard, creating a cohesive, modern complex designed for collaboration, training, and creativity. The new iHub Torretech will function as a dynamic ecosystem supporting startups, digital innovation, and business incubation — a first-of-its-kind facility in southern Alicante province.

Paredes emphasized that the initiative is a cornerstone of the current administration’s 2025 municipal budget strategy, which prioritizes the recovery and repurposing of historic public assets. “We are not just restoring buildings,” he said. “We are generating jobs, fostering talent, and building a bridge between Torrevieja’s rich heritage and its productive future.”

iHub Torretech: A Dual-Track Innovation Engine

While construction preparations advance, the council is finalizing the tender for the operational management of iHub Torretech, expected to launch in the coming weeks. The center will operate under two integrated pillars:

  1. Technical Office – Responsible for strategic planning, promotion, and day-to-day management of the hub.
  2. Talent Launchpad – A dedicated program for training, mentoring, and incubating startups and innovative projects.

The hub will offer coworking spaces, digital labs, event areas, and mentorship programs tailored to local entrepreneurs, freelancers, and tech-driven SMEs. By nurturing homegrown talent and attracting external investment, iHub Torretech aims to position Torrevieja as a regional leader in the digital economy.

Urban Regeneration Meets Economic Strategy

The La Purísima complex, long underutilized, sits in a prime central location — making its revival a symbolic and practical win for urban renewal. Once completed, the center will not only preserve architectural heritage but also create direct and indirect jobs during construction and operation.

Torrevieja’s economy has traditionally relied on tourism and services. However, with over 80,000 residents and a growing expatriate professional community, there is increasing demand for diversified opportunities. According to the Alicante Chamber of Commerce, the province saw a 22% rise in new business registrations in 2024, with technology and creative industries leading growth.

“The iHub Torretech will connect young talent, entrepreneurs, and established companies with the technological and business opportunities our city can offer,” Paredes affirmed. “It’s a tool to retain local graduates, attract digital nomads, and stimulate year-round economic activity.”

Looking Ahead: A Model for Sustainable Development

The project aligns with broader European Union recovery objectives, emphasizing green rehabilitation, digital transition, and youth employment. While specific sustainability features have not yet been detailed, the extended warranty and reduced timeline suggest a focus on efficiency and durability.

Once operational — projected for early 2027 — iHub Torretech will join a growing network of innovation nodes along the Costa Blanca, complementing similar initiatives in Alicante, Elche, and Benidorm. Local stakeholders, including the University of Alicante and regional business associations, have already expressed interest in partnerships.

As Torrevieja continues to evolve from a seasonal tourist destination into a year-round innovation-friendly city, the rehabilitation of La Purísima stands as a bold statement: heritage and progress are not mutually exclusive.

With works set to begin in just weeks, the countdown to a new era of opportunity in Torrevieja has officially started.
