Walking Football World Nations Cup Kicks Off in Torrevieja

Global Teams Unite for the Largest International Tournament of Its Kind

The Costa Blanca is buzzing with excitement as the world of walking football descends on Torrevieja. On Tuesday, October 21, the Walking Football World Nations Cup begins, marking the largest international tournament in the sport’s history. Over two thrilling weeks, more than 45 nations and 120 teams will compete at the Torrevieja Sports City, turning the city into a global hub for this inclusive, age-friendly sport.

Walking football, a variation of soccer where running is prohibited to minimize injury risks and foster camaraderie, is the heart of this event. Organized by Spain Walking Football with support from the Torrevieja City Council, the tournament is set to generate over two million euros for the local economy, filling hotels, restaurants, and drawing thousands of international visitors.

First Week: Three Categories in the Spotlight

From October 21 to 24, the focus is on Women’s Over 40, Men’s Over 70, and Men’s Over 50, with matches held at the state-of-the-art Torrevieja Sports City, designed for elite events with full accessibility.

Women’s Over 40: A Passionate Start

The women’s competition kicks off with a group stage featuring electrifying matchups. Japan faces hosts Spain in the opening game, setting a high-energy tone. Other key fixtures include England vs. Australia and France vs. Czech Republic. Wales joins in the second round, adding Celtic flair. The top four teams will advance to the semifinals in a knockout format.

Men’s Over 70: Veteran Showdowns

This category celebrates experience, with two groups of four teams. Group A sees England take on the Netherlands, while Japan meets Italy. In Group B, Canada battles France, and Australia faces the Basque Country. After the group stage, teams progress to quarterfinals based on rankings for balanced contests.

Men’s Over 50: A Fierce Global Clash

The most competitive division, with 18 nations across three groups, is led by top seeds England (world number 1), Czech Republic (world number 2), and Spain.

  • Group A: England, Australia, Basque Country, Singapore, Italy, Scotland.
  • Group B: Czech Republic, Canada, Jersey, Cyprus, Morocco, Japan.
  • Group C: Spain, Rwanda, France, Wales, Nigeria, Portugal.

The top two teams per group, plus the two best third-placed teams, will reach the quarterfinals.

Sponsors and Global Reach

Desire Properties, the main sponsor, ensures logistical support, while Just 4 Keepers provides free goalkeeper gloves to all teams. Fans worldwide can watch live via Veo for a 10-euro subscription covering both weeks. “Torrevieja is the perfect host for this World Cup,” said Sports Councilor Diana Box Alonso, highlighting the city’s top-tier facilities.

Second Week: More Action to Come

After the October 24 finals, the tournament continues from October 28 to 31 with Men’s Over 60, Women’s Over 50, and Women’s Over 60 categories. Spain aims to shine in multiple divisions, including Men’s Over 50 and Women’s Over 40.

Torrevieja’s Moment in History

With its Mediterranean charm and sporting legacy, Torrevieja is cementing its place as a walking football hub. This sport, booming in Europe, promotes health and community for older adults. The tournament is more than a competition—it’s a celebration of global friendship and timeless vitality. As players take to the pitch, Torrevieja steps into the spotlight.
