41 additional agents boosted coverage, traffic safety and crime prevention across the city
The Department of Security and Emergencies has released its summer report on Local Police operations, highlighting a 75% increase in service calls compared to last year. Councillor Federico Alarcón, alongside senior police officials, said the reinforcement of 41 extra officers allowed better citywide coverage and improved public safety from June to August.
During this period, the Local Police carried out 14,802 interventions. Traffic units handled 468 accidents — with only one fatality — and issued 63 reports for offences such as driving under the influence, speeding and refusing tests. Officers also filed 50 criminal reports leading to 43 arrests for theft, gender violence and resisting authority.
Police cracked down on illegal street vending, seizing 128 bundles of counterfeit or unlicensed goods, and issued 420 traffic sanctions plus 137 municipal fines for public drinking, animal welfare violations, disrespect to officers and property damage. This summer also marked the launch of the new School Patrol unit to increase safety around educational centres.
Alarcón confirmed that the city will continue to strengthen security measures after the positive impact of the expanded force this summer.
