Court ruling allows City Council to recover emblematic coastal space for public use
The Orihuela City Council has officially reopened the Cabo Roig promenade after receiving judicial authorization to enter and occupy the expropriated land from the Bellavista I Community. The court order, issued on August 19 by the Administrative Court of Elche, granted the council access to 142.32 square meters of municipal land needed to complete the project.
The contested section, around 30 meters long, connects the public parking area on Calle Levante in Cabo Roig with the Aguamarina public calisthenics park. Despite opposition from the Bellavista I community, the court confirmed that the land in question is not residential and forms part of a common passageway adjoining the maritime public domain.
Mayor Pepe Vegara underlined that the decision marks the end of a long and complex legal process: “Today we complete a procedure that has been followed with all legal guarantees, allowing Orihuela Costa to recover one of its most emblematic spaces.”
With this ruling, the promenade is once again open to residents and visitors, fulfilling the city’s commitment to public access and the general interest.
