Spanish swimming legend honored by the city and young local athletes
The mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolón, and Sports Councillor Diana Box officially welcomed Mireia Belmonte, considered the greatest Spanish sportswoman of all time. For the first time, the city received the Olympic, World, and European swimming champion, whose legacy inspires generations across borders.
During the event at the City Hall’s Plenary Hall, Belmonte was celebrated by a group of young Torrevieja swimmers and signed the municipality’s Book of Honour. The mayor presented her with a salt boat as a memento of her visit.
Eduardo Dolón highlighted Belmonte’s humility and sporting values, expressing hope for future collaboration to promote swimming in Torrevieja. Mireia Belmonte thanked the city for its warm welcome and praised the local sports facilities, especially the Olympic-size pool, calling them among the best she has seen worldwide.
