Nuca the Turtle Returns to Sea

Satellite tracking will monitor her journey as part of a conservation project

Nuca, the sea turtle rescued in February from Torrevieja’s harbor, has been released back into the sea after two months of recovery at the Oceanogràfic’s ARCA del Mar in Valencia.

The release took place from a boat off Torrevieja’s coast, attended by Mayor Eduardo Dolón, Environment Councilor Antonio Vidal, municipal biologist Juan Antonio Pujol, Real Club Náutico president Carlos Carmona, and Oceanogràfic veterinarians.

Nuca had suffered a past injury that left one flipper amputated and had a fishing hook lodged in her esophagus. After endoscopic surgery and treatment, she made a full recovery. Before her release, veterinarians fitted her with a satellite transmitter to track her movements in real time.

The conservation project is supported by Spain’s Fundación Biodiversidad and funded through the EU’s NextGeneration initiative, aiming to improve protection strategies for endangered turtle species.
